Kaipara residents can learn how to transform food scraps and green waste into compost at a workshop in Maungatūroto this month.
Waste audits have found that organic material makes up about 40 per cent of the rubbish placed in Kaipara’s blue bags. Sustainable Kaipara says much of this waste could instead be turned into compost, reducing what goes to landfill while improving garden soil.
The workshop aims to show that composting does not have to be complicated, expensive or smelly and will cover basic composting principles, common problems and mistakes, and different methods suited to a range of households.
Participants will also learn about traditional composting, worm farms and the indoor composting method bokashi. The session suits complete beginners and people wanting help to improve their existing composting systems.
Hosted by Sustainable Kaipara, the workshop will be held at the Maungatūroto Country Club from 2pm to 4pm on September 27.
Information about the Maungatūroto Edible Village Project will also be shared, and the afternoon will conclude with shared kai.
Entry is by koha. Spaces are limited and bookings can be made through Sustainable Kaipara’s Facebook events page.
