A heartfelt thank-you to all the children who shared the wisdom of their dads (and granddads) for the Best-Ever Fatherly Advice competition. Your words made us smile, laugh and reflect on the special lessons only dads can give.
Each entry was full of love and creativity, and we appreciate the effort and honesty you put into them.
It wasn’t easy picking a winner, however Theo Eriksen (aged 12) and Mum Meg Eriksen’s entry pipped the others at the post. Theo wrote:
“My Dad says if you can’t fix it with duct tape, you’re not using enough duct tape. At first I thought he only meant for my bike and rugby boots, but now I get it – it’s about not giving up when something’s broken. Keep trying, patch it up and find another way. Also, duct tape really does fix nearly everything. Except maybe my homework.”

Second place went to Jemma Pervan (aged 35), who imparted some wise words from her Granddad Addie:
“Life’s a bit like farming up here in Rodney and the Kaipara; you don’t control the weather, but you choose how you work the soil. Be steady, be honest and treat people like you’d want your stock treated – with respect and care. Don’t rush; good things grow slow. Save more than you spend, listen more than you talk and when times get tough, remember the seasons always turn. Hold tight to your family, because they’re your true harvest. Everything else is just weather passing through. Go placidly amid the noise and haste. Be careful and strive to be happy.”
