Kaipara District Council has confirmed visitors to the Mangawhai Heads surf beach will have more car parking available.
Speaking at the opening of the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service (MHVLS) clubhouse this month, Kaipara District Council Mayor Jonathan Larsen announced that 67 car parks will be added on the western side, making a substantial increase in available parking at the beach.
“While we accept that there is never going to be enough car parking in this area, and we encourage people to cycle and catch the summer bus, the parking upgrade is going to happen,” Larsen said.
The project will also include six accessible car parks, a dedicated bus drop-off area and an expanded bus park to accommodate a 12-metre coach.
Redevelopment of the car park will start this week and will take about 10 weeks. The works are in line with the Mangawhai Heads Reserve Concept Plan, which was adopted in 2025 following community consultation.
A small portion of existing parking will be unavailable during periods of construction. Access for emergency services and pedestrians will be maintained at all times and vehicle movements will be carefully managed.
“It’s a big investment in a really important location in Mangawhai,” Larsen said.
