
The Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi will receive $40,000 from Auckland Council’s Regional Historic Heritage Grants Programme.
The money will go towards the restoration of the island’s lighthouse, the lighthouse keeper’s house, signal station, diaphonic fog signal station and gun cotton store. The lighthouse dates back to 1864 and is the oldest working lighthouse in NZ.
Other projects in the district that received funding included Silverdale & Districts Historical Society ($10,000) for re-piling and building repair work, the Hibiscus Coast Presbyterian Church ($6641) for maintenance, Puhoi Hotel ($30,000) for painting and Puhoi Centennial Hall ($17,922) for exterior painting.
The Heritage Grant fund had a total of $500,000 available for allocation in the 2021/2022 financial year. In total, 38 applications were received, requesting a total of just over $1.2 million.
