Ten members of the Hibiscus Coast Triathlon Club braved chilly water and stormy weather on Saturday, August 29, swimming 2.5km from Manly Beach to Tindalls Bay and back to raise funds for Kenzie’s Gift as part of the Big Winter Plunge.
Kenzie’s Gift is a New Zealand charity supporting children and young people aged three to 24 who are affected by serious illness or the death of a parent, primary caregiver or sibling. The charity provides funded therapy, support kits and other resources to help young people and their whānau navigate grief and serious illness.
Supported by two crew members, the swimmers took on the open-water challenge in water temperatures of around 14°C.
Club member Ben Fraser says the event was a fun way to finish the season while supporting a good cause. Members meet at Manly Beach weekly throughout winter to swim together.
“It was a really cool way to celebrate our last swim while raising funds for Kenzie’s Gift. It’s only cold for the first 10 minutes – then it warms up!”
The team has raised $510 so far, with donations helping Kenzie’s Gift continue providing professional support to young people and families across Aotearoa.
