Ōrewa Primary transformed its classroom into a student art gallery for friends and whānau in June, with the students’ painted, moulded, splattered, shaded and feathered projects on display.
The school has specialist teachers who teach science, music and art one day each week, with students rotating through each subject. For their art block, years one to six explored a range of media while developing skills such as blending, shading, line work, fine motor control, and warm and cool colour techniques.
Ōrewa Primary’s art teacher, Ashleigh Valentine, says that students normally complete two or three projects per term
“Each year group was given the same task, but each student took it in their own direction. The specialist programme celebrates everyone’s uniqueness,” she says.
