Work on the O Mahurangi Penlink project is set to pause over the Christmas-New Year period, with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency thanking locals for their patience as crews continue to build the new highway linking Whangaparāoa Peninsula with State Highway 1.

The agency says the new route will strengthen transport resilience for the peninsula, provide an alternative to Whangaparāoa Road as the single access point, and support housing and economic growth across north Auckland.

Construction teams will take a break from Monday, December 22, returning Monday, January 5. Some crews may still be on site on December 22 and 23, and regular checks will continue during the shutdown. Waka Kotahi reminds the public that construction areas remain closed at all times for safety.

As 2025 comes to an end, the project continues to reshape access to the peninsula. Achievements so far include more than one million cubic metres of earth moved, two of the six bridges completed, and 2300 metres of drainage installed along with 83 manholes.

Wēiti River Bridge progresses

Multiple cranes have been working across the Wēiti River to build two V-shaped pylons that will stand 60 metres tall. Work has begun on the bridge’s superstructure and crews are preparing to install the form travellers – the movable platforms used to build the deck in stages.

Deck construction is expected to start in early 2026. The bridge will be 535 metres long and 45 metres above the water, with space for two traffic lanes and a 3.5-metre shared path. Its width allows for future bus lanes and it will also carry water, power, communications and wastewater services.

Duck Creek Road update

Stillwater residents began using the new Duck Creek Road bridge and upgraded road section from December 11. A short section will return to one lane in early 2026 while finishing works are completed. More information will be provided in the New Year.
