Red Beach seawall repairs due to commence

The seawall at Red Beach, pictured, is to be repaired, starting after Easter – a major project that is expected to take around six to eight weeks to complete.

In many ways, the beach is a smaller scale version of Orewa, and suffers similar erosion issues and storm damage (albeit on a smaller scale).

As a result, the rip-rap wall along it is now broken apart or covered by sand in places, exposing the edge of the adjacent public reserve.

Auckland Council obtained resource consent to repair 86m of the wall towards the end of last year – the consent was not publicly notified.

The wall, designed to protect the grassed reserve above the beach from wave and storm damage, is to be repaired from Red Beach Surf Club to the boat ramp at Bay St. The work, undertaken by Mason Contractors, involves the removal of rock in sections and the placement of geotextile cloth to retain material. Existing rock and some new rock will be put in place and inappropriate material, including undersize rock and concrete, removed.

The wall will be repaired in sections of around 10–20m at a time – a process that involves heavy machinery such as trucks and diggers.

Council’s Parks – North manager, Martin van Jaarsveld, says the price for the project cannot be disclosed at present as the process is “still in the procurement phase”.

He says that a traffic management plan will be implemented to ensure public access while allowing for contractor and materials access.
