Heritage home open day

There will be a rare opportunity to step inside one of Kaipara’s heritage gems on Saturday, May 31.

Ruatuna – the childhood home of New Zealand’s first native born prime minster, Gordon Coates – will open its doors to the public. Built of pit-sawn kauri in 1877, the homestead is cared for by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and is displayed just as the last family member left it in 2000, with the addition of some items which illustrate Coates’ military and political life.

The tour is part of celebrations marking this year being the centenary of Coates’ election as Prime Minister.

Guided tours will include the house and garden, and will operate at 10am and 11.15am. Admission, $10 adults. The house is at 41 Tinopai Road, Tinopai. To book, email ruatuna@heritage.org.nz or phone 027 238 351
