A gardening success story in Mangawhai is the 14-year-old Mangawhai Community Garden in Moir Street, next to the Domain.
One of the organisers, Alison Bain, says the garden welcomes new volunteers to its weekly working bees on Fridays, from 8am onwards.
Volunteering at the garden is an opportunity to meet new people and learn more about growing a variety of fruit and vegetables.
Alison says the garden is working towards being self-sufficient with activities such as making chutneys and preserves from garden produce and selling them in the shop on site.
“The garden has grown into something quite exceptional,” she said. Long-term, she would like to see community gardens across the district share knowledge and experiences.
“We’re all very busy and we are all volunteers, but it would be great if a get-together could be organised so we can learn from one another.”
