Matakana Community Group is asking for ideas on how the town’s only shared public green space, Diamond Jubilee Park, can best be used in future.
At present, Matakana Pony Club has a non-exclusive licence from Auckland Council to occupy the majority of the 3.6-hectare park in Matakana Valley Road, as well as a lease for its pavilion. Both are up for renewal next month.
The community group says this presents a rare opportunity to suggest how the space could better serve a wider selection of local residents, whether that includes sports facilities and pitches, picnic and barbecue areas, a playground, continued equestrian use, or community events and concerts.
“Jubilee Park is public land zoned for active sport and recreation, meaning it’s intended for all of us to enjoy, from horse riding and cricket to walking, events and outdoor play,” the group’s online survey says.
“With the current lease up for renewal in July, now’s the time to re-imagine how this space could better serve everyone in our growing community.”
Feedback from the survey will be used by the group for a formal deputation to Rodney Local Board next month.
All completed entries will also go into a draw for a $250 Matakana Village voucher.
