Two weeks of traffic detours start this Monday morning, March 31, with the complete closure of Warkworth’s Great North Road between the Hill Street and Hudson Road intersections 24 hours a day.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and Auckland Transport (AT) say the full road closure will be in force until Friday, April 11 and is necessary to replace a broken culvert and other upgrades.
All traffic will be detoured via Matakana Road and Te Honohono Ki Tai Road in both directions, though the 995, 998 and 999 bus services will use Hudson Road to get to the community transport hub park and ride, which will stay open and have a temporary bus stop inside.
The detour route is expected to add around four minutes to people’s journeys.
NZTA said access for local residents and emergency services would be maintained throughout the closure.
“Work will take place between 7.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Some overnight work may be required and will be communicated to nearby residents in advance, with contractors working hard to minimise noise and disruption as much as possible,” a spokesperson said.
“Please be patient and treat our crews with kindness and respect. Reduce your speed, adhere to temporary speed limits and follow the traffic management directions at our work sites.”
The work is being carried out by Wellsford-based Wharehine Contractors, which urged drivers to plan ahead and allow extra time while the 24-hour road closure was in force.
“We appreciate that this will create delays for drivers. However, this will allow the recovery work to be completed as quickly as possible.”
NZTA and AT thanked drivers in advance for their patience while the flood alleviation work was carried out.
