Temporary carpark closure

The location of temporary free parking on Baxter Street that will be open during maintenance work on the carpark above Westpac and the New World covered carpark.

Maintenance work on the carpark off Neville Street will begin on November 10 and is expected to take around one to two weeks to complete, Auckland Council has advised.

One Mahurangi Business Association manager Murray Chapman said while this work was necessary, the timing coincided with the start of the busy Christmas shopping season, “which is a crucial period for our local retailers”.

As such, One Mahurangi contacted council to request a deferral until the New Year, but this wasn’t possible due to contractor scheduling and maintenance requirements

Chapman said, “We also reached out to Auckland Transport (AT) to ask whether parking enforcement could be relaxed in the surrounding area during the closure.

“Although this could not be formally suspended, AT has confirmed it will work alongside council to help reduce the impact wherever possible.

“In response to our concerns, council has agreed to open the Baxter Street reserve area beside the skate ramp for temporary free parking throughout the closure period.”

He added, “This is a positive step that will help ease pressure on parking in the town centre. We appreciate council’s willingness to listen to community feedback and work with us on finding a practical solution.”
