Dentist Yogi Singh from Kowhai Coast Dental was crowned the corner-to-corner champion at Warkworth Bowls on Tuesday, February 10 with the event capping off a bumper business bowls season.
Later in the evening, bowls president John Hurdley and Terrence Banks of Ray White NZ, the tournament’s principal sponsor, presented the trophy and a certificate to competition winners Warkworth Surveyors, their third win in seven years.
Meanwhile Mahurangi Matters aka The Press Gang finished 10th out of 16 teams after an up-and-down effort across the rounds.
Hurdley said it had been one of the best seasons the club had hosted.
“The attendance has been great and the players have all really enjoyed themselves. Once the newer players started learning how to bowl then it got very competitive. We’ve got great club support, and we just want everyone who comes in here to have fun.”
He added, “Many thanks to Mahurangi Matters, who have offered the winning team a half-page editorial so that’s great news as well.”
Banks expressed his gratitude for a well-run tournament and said it had been a colourful competition with some friendly banter, some good bowls, and some great excuses for bad bowls.
“We’ve done this a few years and this one has probably been the most fun,” he said.
Julie George stepped in for organiser Cathy Parsons, who was unable to attend for family reasons, and revealed the next iteration of the tournament later this year would be expanded.
“We’re going to extend it so you get to play all teams, like a round-robin. So it’ll be a bit fairer but we might need another night too – but we think you’re up for it,” she said.
George invited Joy Harper-Keeley Joy up to the front of clubhouse.
“There’s one special lady here that I would like to come up. I know that this lady has been working three days in the kitchen before she came in here to work tonight, and we really appreciate you.
“So we just wanted to say thank-you, to you and the whole team in the kitchen.”
Finally, club member Michelle Macdonald thanked Hurtley for all his hard work with a bottle of bubbles.
“John has steered the club through the last couple of challenging years. So on behalf of everybody here Cathy has organised a thank-you for all his support for the business house bowls, especially his strong voice on the microphone and the smooth running of the raffles,” she said.
