NZ Transport Agency/Waka Kotahi is preparing the highways for the peak holiday season, starting with the final resurfacing of the Brynderwyn Hills.
The SH1 will be fully closed over two four-day ‘super weekend’ closures, November 13-16 and November 20-23. Motorists will once again be detoured around Cove Road, with heavy trucks and trailers to take Paparoa-Oakleigh highway and Dargaville’s SH12/14.
An NZTA spokesperson says while they understand that a full road closure is disruptive to drivers, it proves to be the most efficient and effective way to get the work done in good time.
“The full road width is needed for paving machinery and roadworkers to operate safely,” the spokesperson says. “Partial or night-time closures aren’t feasible due to safety, space, efficiency and quality concerns. A full closure allows for a seamless finish without centreline joints.”
A ‘stop/go’ or partial closure would also disrupt the region for a longer period of time, potentially extending the programme by 12 to 14 weeks.
If both weekends are impacted or delayed by wet weather, back-up dates will be scheduled on off-peak times, the spokesperson says.
“The super weekends will ensure the Brynderwyns are fully open for summer and avoid extending disruption over many months while supporting Northland’s freight and peak tourism season.”
