Dog owners in Kaipara, Wellsford and Whangārei who are struggling with the cost of desexing their pets are being offered free procedures through a community programme aimed at reducing unwanted litters.
The Best Dog Trust has opened applications for its latest round of free dog desexing, with the programme covering the full cost of desexing and microchipping – a package valued at more than $450.
The initiative is available to owners with a Community Services Card or those experiencing genuine financial hardship.
Priority will be given to medium and large dogs, including bully breeds, farm dogs and Shar Peis, while small dogs and those purchased from breeders or pet stores are not eligible.
Participating veterinary clinics are located in Whangārei, Ruakākā, Waipū, Maungaturoto, Ruawai and Wellsford.
The programme aims to reduce the number of unwanted dogs and puppies across the three districts by helping owners who might otherwise be unable to afford desexing.
The Best Dog Trust said the initiative is made possible through support from SPCA New Zealand, Whangarei District Council and sponsor Morris & Morris Funerals.
Originally established in 2014 as Ruakākā Dog Rescue by two local friends, the organisation has grown into The Best Dog Trust, continuing its focus on improving the welfare of dogs through education, support and practical assistance for owners.
