Quietly strengthening the heart of Maungaturoto

Otamatea Community Services (OCS), a long-standing social support hub based on Hurndall Street in Maungaturoto, continues to expand its role as a lifeline for local residents of all ages.

As a non-governmental organisation, OCS provides a wide range of wraparound services designed to support whānau, strengthen wellbeing and build community resilience.

From counselling and financial mentoring to social work, parenting support and family services, OCS offers confidential, accessible help to those who need it.

Every Tuesday, OCS opens its doors for a free community lunch, drawing together people from across the district to share food and conversation, and browse racks of second-hand clothing available at no cost to individuals and families. Administrator Gail Barnett says donations of good-quality clothing are always welcome.

For those needing transport, OCS runs a free community van service to Whangārei twice a month, on the second Tuesday and fourth Wednesday, providing a link for residents who need access to shopping and essential services. The service pauses in January, but resumes in February.

OCS also plays a role in shaping the region’s future social workforce. Trainee social workers from NorthTec regularly complete placement hours with the organisation, gaining practical experience while contributing to community support programmes.

Behind the scenes, OCS operates with a small but dedicated team of 10 part-time staff, supported by volunteers and governed by a community board. With several board members recently moving on to new ventures, the organisation is currently seeking a board secretary and additional board members to help guide its work.

Barnett says the organisation’s strength lies in its people – staff, volunteers, board members and community members who step forward to support one another.

“We’re here for whānau, for individuals and for anyone who needs a hand,” she says. “OCS is about community looking after community.”

Otamatea Community Services operates from 153-155 Hurndall Street, Maungaturoto. New volunteers, board applicants, donors, and community members are always welcome to get in touch.
