Auckland tops national average for housing consents

Photo: Auckland Council Auckland continues to drive housing growth, recording new home consents well above the national average on a per capita basis in the year to March 2026. The region reached 8.8 homes per 1,000 residents, ahead of the national rate of 7.1, while Canterbury and Otago led overall with the highest per capita building activity.
