Camellias celebrate 125 years of suffrage

Orewa College and the Zonta Club of Hibiscus Coast joined together recently to celebrate the fact that 125 years ago, women got the vote in New Zealand.

The group, including a number of the college’s history students, planted Kate Sheppard camellias outside the school library last month.

The plants were donated by the Zonta Club.

Zonta Hibiscus Coast President Cathy McConnell says she hopes the planting will be a visual reminder.

“When they pass by I hope they will remember that proud moment in our history,” she says “The flowers and plaque will hopefully also serve as a reminder that there is still work to be done to empower women and girls both here in New Zealand and overseas.”

The white camellia was a symbol of the women’s suffrage movement, with suffragists giving white camellia blooms to parliamentarians who voted to give the vote to women in 1893.
