Chance to explore Te Araroa trail

The Auckland Te Araroa Trust will host a First Steps Te Araroa walk through Rodney on Sunday, April 11.

Trust chairman Clayton Wakefield says a lot of people don’t know that the 3000km walking trail from Cape Reinga to Bluff passes through Rodney.

“This is an amazing chance to experience walking a section of the trail, meet fellow walkers and learn about our special part of Te Araroa,” he says.

“People of all ages and abilities can enjoy a morning walk – ticking off their first segment of one of the best trails in the world.”

The First Steps Te Araroa walk will start at Matthews Road, off Woodcocks Road, Warkworth, and proceed over Moirs Hill to Puhoi, about 16km and 3.5 hours away.

Friendly local guides will be there to describe the route and point out highlights.

Walkers can take advantage of a bus that leaves the Puhoi Pub at 8am, which will take them to the trailhead in Matthews Road. A second bus leaves the Puhoi Pub at 2pm and returns walkers to Mathews Road if required.

The bus journey costs $10 and must be booked in advance by emailing auckland@teararoa.org.nz.

Walkers should meet at Matthews Road at 8.45am. They should wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather conditions, and bring snacks and water. The walk will conclude with an optional lunch at the Puhoi Pub.
