UPDATE: Northpower expects the internet service to be restored by 3.30pm today.
A core cable that supplies internet to Mangawhai has been severed leaving the town without service.
Northpower says civil contractors working at the intersection of Moir Street and Molesworth Drive have accidentally cut the cable.
A spokeswoman says that repairing the fibre optic cable, made from hundreds of small glass strands, is an intricate job and service is unlikely to be restored for some hours.
She says the damaged cable is the “main line” which services the entire town.
Northpower technicians have been on site since 10.50am today.
Civil contractors had only returned to the site today to resume works as Northland moved to alert level three.
The Mangawhai fault is unrelated to widespread outages in Auckland which has affected customers of Slingshot and Orcon.
