Estuary sediment study begins

The impact of large developments, including the Weiti block subdivision in Stillwater, on local waterways, is to be investigated by Auckland Council.

Auckland Council’s stormwater division, Healthy Waters, is about to undertake modelling of the long-term, cumulative impacts of metals and sediment from existing and proposed developments in the Weiti and Okura Estuaries.

Healthy Waters waterways planning manager, Nicholas Vigar, says as well as examining both estuaries, the work will include the Karepiro Bay subtidal region.

“At this stage, we expect data will be collected for approximately six months in order to complete the model build, followed by another six months to model the impacts of various development scenarios,” Mr Vigar says.
