‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ has never been more true than at the Mahu Community Trading Post, on the corner of Whitaker Road and Mill Lane, in Warkworth.
Since opening in September, the community-run shop has donated $24,700 to a number of community organisations and local causes.
Mahurangi Community Charitable Society chair Peter Marwick puts the shop’s success down to a dedicated and hard-working team of volunteers, the support of the community in donating goods and customers who have shopped at the weekly garage sales.
Those who have benefited are:
• Homebuilders Family Services
• Mahurangi College’s ‘Make It Happen’ fund
• Abuse Prevention Services
• The Mahurangi Harbour Shellfish Restoration Project
• Primary schools at Leigh, Kaipara Flats, Warkworth and Ahuroa
• A.I.M. (Adults In Motion) Warkworth for a sensory room at their premises
• Mahurangi East Volunteer Fire Brigade for its Sky Tower Challenge
“We also donated to the newly-established Warkworth Men’s Shed to help with set up costs,” Peter says. “We are definitely living up to our motto of ‘Making a Difference in Mahurangi’.”
