Kauri model features in show stand

A scale model of a mature kauri tree, created by the award-winning special effects and prop company Wētā Workshops, will be a feature of the Northland Regional Council stand at the Northland Field Days this week.

The model, which is a 1:82 representation of a kauri, is based on a tree known as Father of the Kauri, which stood at Mill Creek, Mercury Bay. Father of the Kauri had a known trunk diameter of about 7.5 metres, which is more than two metres larger than the 5.2-metre trunk diameter of Tane Mahuta, God of the Forest, in Waipoua Forest, Northland.

Council chair Tui Shortland says the Council stand will also include a Talk Tent, which will provide a forum for talks and demonstrations. There will be talks about wetlands, groundwater (Freshwater Plan), how to get rid of pest plants and land management.

Council staff will also be on hand to answer questions and give advice, particularly around protecting the environment.

“In addition, all the usual favourites will be there including pest animals, pest plants, and interactive displays.

“There’ll even be a daily slot called ‘Roarsome’ where you can win a prize for the best deer roar. We look forward to welcoming our community to the event.”

Field days in Dargaville will be held from Thursday to Saturday, March 2 to 4.
