Major fire closes SH1 near Te Hana

A section of State Highway 1 north of Wellsford was closed last night as firefighters battled a large blaze at a workshop in Te Hana.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand received multiple calls reporting the fire about 4.34pm. Crews arrived to find the building well alight and worked to contain the blaze while protecting nearby properties.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said over 30 firefighters from eight crews from Wellsford, Warkworth, Mangawhai and Kaukapakapa attended, with aerial support from Whangarei, and support and relief crews from surrounding brigades as far afield as Auckland.

In an update on Facebook, Maungaturoto Volunteer Fire Brigade said water supply played a critical role in the firefighting operation.

“An outstanding effort was put in by all crews involved, working together under challenging conditions to contain the fire and minimise damage to surrounding properties and exposures.

“These incidents are a great reminder of the strength of teamwork, coordination, and dedication across our volunteer fire service.”

Police closed State Highway 1 between Coronation Street and Whakapirau Road, with motorists diverted through Mangawhai.

The fire occurred near Te Hana Reserve, about 5km north of Wellsford. The fire was largely extinguished by 10pm but a presence was maintained overnight to monitor and dampen down hotspots.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
