A group of Year 6 students at Gulf Harbour School is focusing on charitable work, and will hold fundraising events in the community next term.
Choosing a charity, and then putting together things such as an event idea and sponsorship has been a team effort, providing the students with opportunities to learn about things such as making presentations.
The teacher who is coordinating the leadership team fundraising events, Ruth Taylor, says the bigger picture is that the children are learning about the value of service, and putting others first.
“It’s been good for the kids to recognise how lucky they are,” she says.
Each team is supporting a different charity – Red Cross, Unicef, Make a Wish Foundation and Love Soup Hibiscus Coast.
Sponsors on board so far include Party Kingdom, Harcourts and Gulf Harbour Country Club.
Sophia Cosbie’s group will hold a fun afternoon for 2-6 year olds at Party Kingdom, Lucia Preece’s team is holding a cupcake sale outside The Warehouse Whangaparāoa and Addison Denton’s group will run an arts and crafts day at the school – each of them hopes to raise hundreds of dollars for their chosen charity. Georgia Shaw wants to bring in around 1000 Christmas presents, donated by the community, to be given out at Love Soup’s Christmas lunch.
