Lucy Peason, aged 17 of Stanmore Bay, has been tasked with providing young people’s views on local political issues.
The Year 13 Kingsway School student was appointed to Auckland Council’s Youth Advisory Panel last month. She will work closely with the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board, providing feedback from a youth perspective.
Lucy says she has never been particularly interested in politics but being appointed to the panel is a good fit with her strong focus on community.
She currently works as a caregiver at Northhaven Hospital and is considering studying for a degree in human rights or social sciences in future.
“I hope to learn a lot from being around people that are politically minded,” she says. “I’m excited to soak it all in. I’m often the person talking, but I want to listen and learn in that environment.”
The panel is made up of 21 people aged 16–24, representing each of Auckland’s local board areas. Their job over the next three years will be to advise council on matters of importance to young Aucklanders and to add a youth voice to council plans, strategies and policies.
The panel will hold their first workshop with council staff this month and a schedule of future workshops and public meetings will be planned.
