On August 10, 2026, at the age of 86, Warkworth resident Terry Nuthall passed away at Evelyn Page Retirement Village following a courageous battle with blood cancer.
Terry grew up in Glendowie and attended Auckland Grammar School. Like many families at the time, his family did not have much money after his father returned from the war, and they lived in a state house.
After an unsuccessful attempt at university, where he planned to study accounting, Terry started his professional journey at the Bank of New Zealand (BNZ).
Known for his laid-back and somewhat rebellious personality – a trait he readily embraced himself – Terry soon swapped his long trousers and brown ties for shorts and more colourful outfits. Although he received a few comments about his unconventional dress, he never paid much attention to them.
In 1965, he was transferred to Melbourne and later to Sydney as Australia was preparing to change to decimal currency. The experience he gained there would prove invaluable when New Zealand made the same change in 1967.
When he returned to New Zealand, Terry helped write extensive manuals explaining how the bank’s documents and records would be converted from pounds to dollars.
His career later took him to Japan, where his role was to persuade banks across Asia, including in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and China, to handle New Zealand export transactions through the BNZ.
True to his individual style, Terry would often travel on Fridays so he could spend the weekend there getting to know how things worked, rather than travelling directly to work on Mondays as others did.
That was Terry – he always had a different idea from everyone else.
From his ability to connect with business people to his strong commitment to serving his community, Terry brought those same qualities to everything he did.
He was a member of Rotary clubs in Kawerau, New Lynn, Mt Roskill and Tokyo, and eventually Warkworth, where he handed in his resignation only two months ago.
His willingness to help others also led him to become chair of the local food rescue organisation in 2017. He was also a lifelong member of the Auckland Orienteering Club (AOC).
Terry was the devoted husband of Bernie Nuthall for 60 years. He was a proud father and father-in-law to Tim and Richelle, Fiona and Byron, and Stephen and Robyn. He was also a cherished grandfather to eight grandchildren and a great-grandfather to two.
For those who knew Terry, his passing marks the loss of a man who lived life on his own terms, always ready to take a different path, help others and make his mark wherever he went.
