Education – Deeds and relationships

My greatest satisfaction as principal this year was seeing our Wellsford students not just achieve, but genuinely thrive, engaged in their learning and connecting positively with their peers. While academic outcomes remain crucial, the most significant foundation for enduring success is built on strong, positive relationships and a deep sense of belonging.

Our Wellsford School motto, Deeds Not Words, guides everything we do. For us, this means that supporting a child’s wellbeing is not a passive wish, but an active, collective effort.

We define success holistically. A child’s ability to learn effectively is fundamentally linked to their sense of security and their emotional health. To understand this, we often look to Te Whare Tapa Whā, the Māori model of health where wellbeing is seen as a house (wharenui) supported by four essential walls.

These walls include physical health (taha tinana) and mental health (taha hinengaro). Crucially, the model also includes taha wairua (spiritual health/sense of purpose) and taha whānau (family and social health). For the house to be strong, all four walls must be nurtured.

In the classroom and on the playground, we see daily that prioritising taha whānau, kindness, collaboration, and a sense of shared community is the most powerful catalyst for achievement. When students feel seen and supported by a positive network, they are ready to engage, take on challenges, and fulfil their potential.

Education is a shared endeavour. We invite the wider Wellsford community to partner with us in the active deed of strengthening these vital relationships for our young people. This is how we put our motto into practice:

The Deed of Presence: Whanau are encouraged to focus on quality interaction. Ask your child what acts of kindness or contribution they made today, valuing their actions and social effort.

The Deed of Partnership: Local residents and businesses your skills and experience provide vital context. Offering to share your expertise with a class is a tangible way to link school learning to the opportunities that await them in the wider world.

By committing to these practical Deeds, Not Words, we ensure that every student is supported by a robust network. We create a dynamic, connected environment where our young people can confidently pursue their passions and grow into resilient members of the community.
