Every three years, our community gets the opportunity to help shape the future of local education in a meaningful way. This September, school board elections are being held across New Zealand, including on the Hibiscus Coast. These elections may not grab headlines, but they are one of the most impactful ways to drive lasting change.
School boards sit at the heart of every thriving school. While principals and teachers focus on day-to-day learning, boards shape the long-term vision, oversee finances, and set key policies. Their decisions ripple through every classroom, affecting how resources are used, and which priorities are championed.
This year, our schools are navigating growth, curriculum change, rising expectations, and financial pressures. Strong boards don’t just respond – they lead. They set direction, support principals, and act as guardians of the community’s trust.
You don’t need to be an education expert to serve on a school board. What’s needed is strategic thinking, sound governance, and a commitment to community service. If you have experience in business, finance, leadership, or a passion for supporting young people, your skills can make a real difference.
Boards are stronger when they reflect the diversity and talents of the community itself. Parents, grandparents, business owners, young professionals; every perspective helps ensure decisions are balanced and relevant. If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I wish schools did more of this” or “I could help make this better”, consider stepping forward to be part of the solution.
Board membership does require commitment, typically a few hours each month, but the rewards are significant. You’ll build governance and leadership skills, form connections with like-minded people, and contribute directly to better outcomes for learners. Many who serve say it’s among the most fulfilling experiences of their lives.
This is also an opportunity to show what it looks like to stand up for something that matters. In an age when it’s easy to be a bystander, participating in school board elections is a powerful act of citizenship. Every nomination, every vote, and every conversation signals that we believe in the value of public education and are willing to invest our time and energy to help it succeed.
Nominations open soon, with voting taking place in September. If you’re thinking of standing, talk with whānau, friends, and colleagues. Often, the best board members are those encouraged by someone who saw their potential.
For nomination details, dates, and eligibility, contact your school office and they’ll guide you through the process.
Our schools are the heart of our community. Don’t sit on the sidelines and hope for the best, be part of creating it. Stand. Vote. Lead. Because our children’s future is worth every effort we can give.
