Environment – New bike hub for Mangawhai

Mangawhai is a community that loves to ride. Between the forestry loops out at Te Arai, the pump tracks at MAZ, and a growing network of mountain bike trails with the establishment of the Mangawhai Bike Park, cycling has become a favourite activity in the area.

Which is why we reckon it’s time to bring a bike hub to Mangawhai.

So, what is a bike hub? Based on the model used successfully across Auckland (with hubs now in 14 locations fixing thousands of bikes a year), a bike hub is a community space offering affordable second-hand bikes, free access to repair tools, basic maintenance workshops, and friendly advice for anyone wanting to get on two wheels, whether that’s a kid on their first bike, a worker switching from the car, or a weekend rider keen to keep their gear in good shape.

For Mangawhai, a local bike hub would mean more affordable access to bikes and repairs for families and visitors. It would provide a drop-in space for basic maintenance so small issues don’t keep bikes off the trails. It will offer a hands-on way for young people to learn bike skills and safety, encourage less reliance on cars for short local trips, and create a natural gathering point for the riding groups, schools, and clubs already active in the area.

It also fits neatly alongside the bigger picture taking shape regionally, with major trail projects in the works that will eventually connect Mangawhai into a wider cycling network.

Right now, Sustainable Kaipara are working through options for land and starting conversations with potential sponsors and partners who want to help get this off the ground. Nothing is locked in yet, which is exactly why this is the moment to get involved if you want a say in how this hub takes shape.
