Roadside weeds
Anyone who drives on NZ’s highways and, in particular, SH1 from Albany to Warkworth would be aware of NZTA’s appalling management of weed control on the motorway designated boundary.
On the hill coming up to Moirs Hill, for example, the western side is a sheer mass of gorse and the invasive pest weed pampas grass. While this is unsightly and a blight on the countryside it is usually not a traffic safety risk.
However, the pampas grass is getting so prevalent that it is blocking roadside traffic signs. One example is the traffic signage going south just after the Johnstones Hill viaduct. The road signs are unreadable, particularly at night, because of the height of the pampas grass. When is NZTA going to accept the responsibility of managing the invasive pest weeds on the land it purchased to create the motorways and do more than just mow roadside grass?
