Siren – August 2021

St John ambulance and Silverdale fire crews had a busy month of medical callouts, with

St John in particular experiencing an above normal workload for the time of year.

Rodney relief territory manager Jason Bennett said the wintry weather had been a factor, and he reminded people to keep warm, and seek advice and help early from health practitioners.

The recent wild weather led to fire crews returning to a large industrial building where the recently repaired roof had again been damaged by strong winds.

Senior Station Officer Jim Maclean said this time, the Silverdale brigade was able to successfully make temporary repairs.

“The storm also brought a number of calls to power lines down, luckily with most being telephone lines and easily cleared by brigade, and trees down on roads provided some chainsaw practice, too,” he said.

He added that the recent fatal road accident between a bus and a car on East Coast Road underlined how lives could be changed in an instant and how it was important to pay attention to the basics of road safety, regardless of what else might seem important at the time.

Finally, St John’s Jason Bennett had a bouquet for a local hospitality business that has been doing good deeds for local ambulance and fire crews.

“St John would like to express its appreciation and thanks to Cafe Manly for their kindness and support to our ambulance officers, by giving them and Fire and Emergency staff free coffees every day,” he said.

Nice work, Café Manly!
