Bowls Ōrewa is reaching out to local colleges and youth organisations to introduce the sport to a younger audience.
The organisation’s newly appointed youth development officer, Kerry Greenhalgh, says the initiative will include a six-week course that covers the basics of bowling, as well as fun activities.
It is set to commence on October 27.
“Bowls is thought of as an older person’s pastime, however over the past four or five years this has changed dramatically,” Kerry says. “There are more younger adults participating than ever before – different versions of the traditional bowling format, such as the shorter Bowls 3 Five, appeal to youth so it seems like a good time to promote our sport to young people.”
He says Bowls Ōrewa’s covered roof means the game can be played all year round making it more accessible to more people.
“Our initial intention is to make it a fun and enjoyable experience for 14-18-year-olds and then look to guide and nurture those who may want to get more serious.”
