With an exciting season ahead that includes the first premier games to be played in Ōrewa, Hibiscus Coast Cricket is poised, waiting for alert levels to drop.

Club manager Gair McSkimming says that Auckland needs to be at Level 3, stage 2, in order for the planned start of the season, at the end of this month, to get underway.

This season the club has full premier status in all forms of the game.

Home games at Victor Eaves Reserve in Ōrewa will bring Auckland’s top teams to the Coast. The first will be the premier 20-20 versus Takapuna, scheduled for Wednesday, December 22 at 5pm.

Gair describes this as a “David v Goliath” game. Takapuna has four Auckland Aces in its team and has been consistently in the top four Auckland clubs.

A further four one-day, and four 2-day (red ball) home games are lined up.

In preparation, Auckland Council has spent $25,000 upgrading the Victor Eaves cricket pitch in the off-season.

Gair says the club expects to field 7-8 men’s teams (including premier reserve and other grades) and 16-18 junior teams this summer, as well as a joint women’s team with Kumeu.

New programmes for primary schools and colleges are also planned including a mid-week 20-20 social competition for colleges and free skills and fun games for 5-9-year-olds (Term 4 only).

“We are excited to make the premier games in Ōrewa into fun events for the whole family, with bouncy castles and food trucks – the lot,” Gair says. “We have got our fingers crossed, along with every other summer sport.”
