Head injury focus for young basketballers

A Whangaparaoa Primary School team (pictured) has run away with the winner’s trophy in the inaugural Mike Pero Round Robin Basketball Tournament.

Five primary schools from the Hibiscus Coast competed in the tournament, which was organised by Mike Pero salesperson Sylvie Borrett.

She says the aim was to raise awareness of head injury, and identify and avoid head injuries in sport.

The event also raised just over $670 for the MS Society Auckland and Headway Brain Injury Auckland.

Representatives of both organisations attended the prizegiving held at the Leisure Centre.

The tournament was managed by coach Llew Dodd.

For Sylvie, the issue of brain injury and MS hits close to home.

Her son suffered a head injury while wake boarding 18 months ago and he brother Robin, in the UK, has had multiple sclerosis for more than 28 years.
