Junior hockey faces challenges

A drop in the number of players signing up for the upcoming hockey season is concerning Mahurangi Junior Hockey Club president Michelle Brogan.

The junior season starts on Saturday May 2, while Mini Sticks (ages three and four) and Fun Sticks (Years 0 to 2) starts on Saturday May 9.

Brogan says there has been a massive drop in player numbers over the last few years.

“Pre-covid, we were looking at 140 to 160 kids in the competition,” she says. “This has fallen to 115 so far this year.”

As a result, both Wellsford Club and Kaipara/Ahuroa Club have closed. However, on a positive note, the Leigh team, which had been absent for several years, returned to the league last year, finishing second in the junior competition.

“It would be fantastic for the development of the sport to have more children involved.”

Late sign-ups are still being accepted for Mini Sticks and Fun Sticks.

Brogan says that despite the drop in participation, sponsors have remained committed to supporting the sport.

“We have some awesome sponsors who have consistently helped provide a fun season every year. However, we need volunteers for our committee – a secretary and a president are the main priorities, as I will be stepping down after next season.”

Matches are played at the Warkworth Turf on Saturday mornings.

Mahurangi College students are involved as umpires, as well as Fun Sticks and Mini Sticks coaches.
