Volley of wins for Orewa

The Orewa Girls Senior Volleyball Team etched themselves into Auckland Secondary School history last month by defending their Auckland Championship title for the third time in a row.

Three years ago, they became the first Harbour Secondary School to win the title. They dominated the Championship last season but had to fight hard to win this year.

The Orewa College team went into the Championship on March 14 as fourth seed after finishing the Auckland Premier League in fourth place, and as the second placed Harbour Team, behind Rangitoto College, who won the Harbour Championships over Orewa. Orewa had not beaten Rangitoto this season until the championship.

According to coach (and Hibiscus Matters sport columnist) Richard Casutt, the sem-final against Mangere College was one of the highlights of the tournament, with the lead changing several times before Orewa player Munroe Martin secured the victory with two tough serves causing errors by the opposing team.

The final saw a match up with Westlake Girls. Orewa won the first two sets comfortably. Westlake fought back to take the third set, but Orewa came back in the final set to take the match 3-1. Orewa’s Georgie Marshall was Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and captain Renei Ursem was also selected in the tournament team.

The next challenge for the team is the NZ Secondary School Championships on March 22-29 where they are looking to improve on last year’s sixth placing. They are pushing for the National title.
