Pick of the pies

Local pie-makers once again featured in the annual Bakels NZ Supreme Pie Awards, which were handed out to nationwide winners last week. More than 5000 pies were entered in 12 categories. Among the judges was NZ chef Peter Gordon. Describing the awards as “the Oscars of NZ’s baking industry”, Bakels managing director Brent Kersel says it was especially exciting to be holding them, as many bakeries were badly affected by Covid-19 lockdowns. Award-winning pies attract customers and boost sales.

Coast pie winners: Bunnarith Sao of Dairy Flat Bakery won a bronze award for his potato top pie and a highly commended, also for potato top, went to Buntha Meng of Wild Grain Bakery in Silverdale. Ōrewa Bakery’s Ty Lim took a bronze award for his vegetarian pie – unfortunately his bakery is currently closed for further repairs following a fire last October. (See story)
