Battle on for Wellsford band

Zyfus is not letting age hold them back in their bid to win Battle of the Bands.

Heavy metal/grunge band Zyfus has secured a place in the Auckland Battle of the Bands final this Thursday (June 5) and is putting on a free bus from Wellsford for fans to attend.

Band members are Martin Worthington on rhythm guitar and vocals, Johnny Barber on drums, Craig Wilson on bass and Karl Moore on lead guitar.

Martin’s partner Angie Bruce says the band did well in the semi finals to hold their own against much younger musicians.

“In one band, the oldest member was 17,” she said. “In Zyfus, ages range from late 30s to late 50s. It’s one of the reasons band members wear hoodies on stage – it’s so they aren’t pre-judged on their age.”

Zyfus has been together in its present line-up for just five months, although both Martin and Johnny played in a previous incarnation of the band many years ago.

The band will go head-to-head with eight other bands on Thursday night, all hoping to win a place in the national final, which will be held in Wellington on June 27 and 28. National finalists stand to win a tour to Japan, as well as recording opportunities.
