A Northland charity that supports frontline healthcare workers has found a new home for its fundraising golf tournament after a cancellation forced it to find a new venue.
As reported in the Mangawhai Focus (June 29), Heart Place Hospital was informed by Mangawhai Golf Club that it could no longer host the event due to a course usage review prompted by membership growth and increased demand at the club.
Despite being shocked by the cancellation, Heart Place Hospital founder and CEO Jacqui O’Connor said at the time that she was determined to carry on with the event and was thrilled when not one, but two golf clubs came to the rescue.
The tournament, which will be played in an Ambrose format, will now be held at Omaha Beach Golf Club next month.
Omaha Beach Golf Club general manager Frazer Bond says the club agreed to host the tournament because it believes supporting charitable events is an important part of its role in the wider community. “Golf clubs should work together and support the communities around them. Our membership comes from that community, so we believe the club also has a responsibility to give something back,” Bond says.
“We’re really excited about the Heart Place Hospital Golf Tournament at Omaha Beach Golf Club on September 24. With just a short time to go, we already have half of the field filled, which is wonderful and such a great show of support,” O’Connor says.
Every team that enters helps the registered charity continue providing wellbeing programmes to those who dedicate their lives to caring for others, and O’Connor says the tournament, which is held every two years, is much more than a golf event.
“The event is shaping up to be a fantastic community day. Our prize table and raffle are looking very plump, with some amazing prizes up for grabs, including the chance to win two business class tickets to Hawaii, along with many other generous donations from our supporters.”
The day will include an after-game meal, a sausage sizzle, music and plenty of laughs as people come together to support Heart Place Hospital in its mission to care for the carers across Aotearoa.
“We’re looking forward to creating a memorable day at Omaha for Heart Place Hospital and bringing people together from across the region,” O’Connor says.
