One of Warkworth’s most familiar faces retired from his role as New World trolley wrangler on July 11 after 27 years in the job. When Tony Dawson started in 1998, the supermarket was situated where Winscombe Mall is today.
At a farewell celebration last week, colleagues heard he’d since gone through around 110 pairs of shoes, witnessed several car collisions and rescued trolleys from all round town, including the river.
Current New World owner Damian Langley said it was clear Tony meant a lot to staff, customers and the community and urged him not to be a stranger, before presenting him with a voucher for free hot chocolate for life and a collection of jigsaw puzzles.
