Lifeline strengthened by community spirit

Mangawhai’s generosity was on full display last month, with the Mangawhai Lions gifting $15,000 to Coastguard Mangawhai.

The funds were raised through the annual Mangawhai Lions Food and Wine Festival, sponsored by New World Mangawhai.

Held earlier this year, the event was attended by more than 800 people, including volunteers from Lions clubs in Mangawhai and other districts, as well as Mangawhai Coastguard, Mangawhai Surf Lifesaving and others in the community.

Lions spokesperson Mandy Hebben said the generosity shown is a reminder of what people can achieve when they come together.

“This is what grassroots fundraising looks like at its best: practical, targeted, and deeply meaningful. The Lions, Coastguard, local sponsors and festivalgoers have together strengthened a service that every one of us may one day rely on,” she said.

Coastguard Mangawhai plans to purchase a wash system for its Kōkako Rescue boat, tractor and trailer, a piece of kit that will be vital in helping the crew remove sand and saltwater, which can be corrosive to machinery.

“This is generosity that will have a real impact on keeping our coastline safer, our volunteers supported and our residents connected,” Hebben said. “The people of Mangawhai should be proud.”
