Mangawhai Lions Club is asking people to donate old New Zealand and foreign coins and banknotes to support its national Heads Up for Kids programme. The initiative collects old New Zealand decimal and pre-decimal currency, along with foreign coins and banknotes which are then redeemed for New Zealand dollars to fund educational opportunities for young people. In the past, funds raised have helped students attend programmes such as the Spirit of Adventure and the Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre. Since launching in 2010, the initiative has collected more than 28.8 tonnes of coins and thousands of banknotes, the equivalent weight of four elephants, 460 cattle, or 6450 cats and has raised almost $612,000. The Reserve Bank estimates that $80 million in old New Zealand coins and $20 million in old banknotes remain unaccounted for. Coin and banknote donations can be dropped off at the Mangawhai Hospice Shop in the Mangawhai Village.
