Bob Richmond, 78, has written a cosy crime story following former Detective Inspector George Simpson, who moves to a quiet coastal town after being injured on the job.
His peace doesn’t last long. A stranger with a gun draws him into a turf war between rival gang leaders, and he can’t resist investigating. Along the way he’s joined by a group of strong-minded women seeking justice, and meets a cast of characters both comic and sinister.
Richmond says the idea came to him five years ago but was set aside until a writers’ workshop at his retirement village encouraged him to return to it. He says his research into police procedures and drug trafficking left him half-expecting armed police at his door.
Away from writing, Richmond has represented New Zealand in masters hockey, taken up oil painting, and dabbled in amateur dramatics and music. He runs Parkrun every Saturday morning and has already started his next novel.
