Residents and staff at Summerset Retirement Village in Warkworth marked the much-anticipated reopening of their bowling green on March 30 with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony and a celebratory cake.
The event also featured a friendly but competitive Staff versus Residents match for a newly introduced trophy. The residents claimed victory – earning bragging rights and setting the stage for what is set to become an annual contest.
Adding to the occasion, centenarian Jack Knowles was given the honour of delivering the first bowl on the newly upgraded surface.
The redevelopment saw the installation of a modern Tiger Weave surface, replacing the previous multi-purpose turf. The project originated from residents’ feedback, prompting the village to commission an independent assessment. The findings confirmed that improvements were needed, leading to the upgrade.
Residents Committee chair Ron Warbrick said the response to the new surface had been overwhelmingly positive.
“It runs beautifully,” he said. “It’s really state-of-the-art. We’ve already started training days for both men and women, and are expecting good turnouts at our roll-ups three times a week.”
The improved facility is also expected to open new opportunities for inter-village competitions, with plans underway to host teams from other Summerset villages across Auckland.
