Police have arrested and charged a 28-year-old man in connection with the assault of a teenager on Riverside Rd, Ōrewa on May 3. The accused faces a charge of being a party to injuring with intent to injure, and first appeared at North Shore District Court on May 15. He is due to reappear on June 5.
The victim was taken to hospital in a serious condition but has since been discharged and is recovering at home, police advised.
Relieving Area Commander for Waitematā North, Inspector Mike Rickards, said the accused was not a local resident and that incidents like this remain uncommon.
“Our message to the public is that, by and large, our community is a safe place to live and play,” Inspector Rickards said.
“It’s understandable that when a violent or tragic event occurs in our community, it creates some angst.”
However, Inspector Rickards advised the community to maintain good ‘situational awareness’ as a preventive measure.
“No matter where you go, continue to live your lives and just stay aware of what’s happening around you. This might be distancing yourself from a person acting aggressively or removing yourself from a situation you don’t feel safe in. If you found yourself feeling unsafe or something untoward is occurring, call us straight away on 111.”
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
