Hillary Square will become a piazza as Vino Ōrewa host an afternoon of Italian opera on Saturday, December 6, with all donations going to the Hibiscus Coast Community Patrol.
The performance will run from 1.30pm to 3pm in the restaurant’s forecourt and will feature guest artists from Opera Ōrewa under the direction of mezzo-soprano Susan Elliot. New Zealand Opera guest artist Emma Pearson (soprano) will perform alongside Elliot, tenor Grey Patel, and pianist Eran Fagan.
Guests can book a table and enjoy Italian and New Zealand wines with a menu of Italian dishes.
The event follows a recent fundraiser held at Vino Ōrewa on November 18, when owner Andy Mackie sponsored food and drink for a community patrol fundraising night, supported by Puhoi Beer and Mission Estate Winery.
Mackie says he was surprised to learn how reliant the patrol is on fundraising.
The group receives no government or Council funding, and with more than 50 patrollers and two vehicles, financial support is needed to keep the operation going, he says.
“We want to express our immense gratitude to the volunteers of the Hibiscus Coast Community Patrol. They are the true heroes in our neighbourhood, working tirelessly to prevent crime and keep our communities safe. Their visible presence and proactive initiatives make a real difference. They are building a safer Aotearoa one patrol at a time.”
Hibiscus Coast Community Patrol chair John Redwood thanked Mackie for his support and says the patrol will continue to approach other organisations for help.
Bookings for the opera afternoon can be made at www.vinoorewa.com/bookings.html. Anyone wanting to support the patrol can phone Redwood on 021 336 289.
