Police are investigating after an armed intruder was disarmed and seriously injured during a confrontation with occupants of a Mangawhai property on Monday afternoon.
Police were called to the Robert Street address just before 2pm yesterday after a 26-year-old man allegedly entered the property armed with a piece of wood and confronted people inside.
Acting Detective Inspector Megan Goldie, of Waitematā CIB, said the man advanced on the occupants before a confrontation occurred and they disarmed him. The man was not known to the occupants.
Police and ambulance staff were called, and the man received medical treatment before being taken to Whangārei Hospital in a serious condition. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
“An investigation is now underway to establish exactly what has occurred, but I can reassure the community that Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this incident,” Goldie said.
A scene guard has been set up at the Robert Street address, with a scene examination to take place at a later stage.
“You will see an increased Police presence in the Mangawhai community in response to this afternoon’s incident.”
Charges are to be confirmed.
