Sustainable Kaipara – Regenerative gardening

There is something truly transformative about learning to garden. Not just in the traditional sense of growing vegetables, but in a way that restores the soil, builds resilience, and connects us more deeply to the land. Gardening holistically and regeneratively is about more than producing food; it’s about working with nature to create thriving ecosystems in our backyards and communities.

At its heart, regenerative gardening recognises soil as a living system. Healthy soil captures carbon, holds water, and nourishes plants, making it one of the most powerful tools we have to combat climate change and adapt to extreme weather. By composting, mulching, planting diverse crops, and respecting natural cycles, we can heal damaged soils and ensure long-term food security.

But the benefits don’t stop with the environment. Gardening in this way nourishes people, too, through healthier, fresher food, reduced household waste, and the joy that comes from working outdoors with our hands. It strengthens communities, fostering knowledge sharing and collective resilience.

Sustainable Kaipara is helping locals explore this potential with their upcoming Mangawhai Garden Workshop Series, held at the Mangawhai Community Garden. The workshops, led by experienced facilitators Judy Keats and Stephanie Gibson, are designed to give participants hands-on skills that are practical, inspiring, and easy to implement at home.

The series kicks off on 20 September with Compost & Soil Health, where you’ll discover how to turn food scraps and garden waste into rich, living soil that feeds your plants and reduces landfill waste. On 4 October, Growing Through the Seasons will guide you through crop selection, planting timing, and regenerative methods like polycropping and green manure to maximise productivity year-round. Finally, on 18 October, Ways with Weeds will flip the script on unwanted plants, teaching you how to identify edible and medicinal weeds, while also offering strategies for weed control and soil improvement.

Workshops cost $30 each or $85 for all three, with sponsorship options available to ensure accessibility. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended via Sustainable Kaipara’s website or Facebook page.

These workshops are more than just gardening lessons, they are an invitation to be part of a growing movement that recognises the power of regenerative practices. By learning to work with nature, we can create abundant gardens, healthier soils, and resilient communities ready to face the challenges ahead.

In the words of many experienced gardeners, “the best time to start was yesterday, the next best time is today.” With workshops like these, Sustainable Kaipara is planting more than gardens, it’s planting the seeds of resilience, sustainability, and community for generations to come.
